MARBLE by definition is a metamorphic, often streaked (veined) rock, formed by alteration of limestone or dolomite. Mainly made of the mineral Calcite, when limestone is exposed to very high temperatures new crystals or calcite grow and form this compact rock. Acidic foods and a big sharp knife are not this stone's best allies, which is why it is not always recommended as a working surface in a kitchen area.
However if the look of marble with its range of beautiful colors and unique veining does better suite your palette, it is best to be properly educated on the do's and don'ts to ensure your countertop lasts a lifetime.
Most importantly you will need to apply and reapply a penetrating sealant to keep liquids and matter from etching, staining or making a bed for bacteria to grow in the pores of the stone. Several of our local natural stone suppliers sell the proper sealants for your needs and if you need any further assistance locating the right one for you, please
